Brett Ratliff/John HaywoodSaturday, Feb. 9th
Brett Ratliff and John Haywood team up, drawing upon East Kentucky’s rich music traditions to speak to a new generation. They play haunting and hard-driving fiddle tunes, mixed with ancient banjo tones and ballads that tell the stories of ancestral memory.
Brett Ratliff is a multi-instrumentalist and has taught traditional Kentucky repertoire far and wide, including The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Swannanoa Gathering, Sore Fingers Week, Augusta Heritage’s Early County Music Week and Old-Time Week, Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, and elsewhere. His first solo release was the 2008 June Appal recording Cold Icy Mountain. Gone Boy, his long awaited second solo project, released in November 2017.
John Haywood is an award winning artist and banjo player from Floyd County, Kentucky. He attended the Old Regular Baptist Church with his papaw, where he heard him sing the old unaccompanied songs of Zion. John is also a visual artist whose work represents the history and music of east Kentucky.
